LLDB vs GDB notes — authorized decision checklist
Choosing LLDB or GDB is mostly a lab packaging decision. Use this notes checklist beside the fuller compares: LLDB vs GDB (LLDB-first) and GDB vs LLDB (GDB-first).

Decision checklist (authorized only)
- What does the course image already ship? Prefer that debugger first.
- Is the target an Apple platform build? Start LLDB unless the syllabus says otherwise.
- Do you need GEF/PEDA/pwndbg-style workflows? Bias toward GDB + approved plugins.
- Do you need LLDB Python scripting on LLVM toolchains? See LLDB Python.
- Record
lldb --version/gdb --versionin the case binder for every session. - Never pick a debugger to bypass protections on software you may not analyze.
Allowed framing
- Picking a default for a new authorized native-lab VM.
- Explaining to students why macOS demos use LLDB while a Linux CTF box uses GDB+GEF.
- Keeping Evidence labeled with the debugger that produced it.
- Switching tools mid-course when the syllabus migrates — with version notes.
Scope we will not cover
- No "undetectable debugger" or anti-anti-debug recipes.
- No crack/keygen workflows on either debugger.
- No exploit PoCs that require a specific debugger UI.
- No unauthorized attach to third-party production processes.
Beginner path (authorized only)
- Read the LLDB-first or GDB-first compare that matches your host.
- Run
hellounder the chosen debugger on an authorized binary; save a backtrace. - Repeat once on the other debugger if both are installed — note command differences.
- Pick one default for the week; document why.
- Escalate scripting via LLDB Python or GEF tips as needed.
- Treat this as a decision checklist, not a replacement for the full compares.
- Default to what the authorized lab image supports cleanly.
- No exploit or anti-debug framing.

FAQ
How is this different from lldb-vs-gdb-authorized / gdb-vs-lldb-authorized?
Those pages are full compare orientations (LLDB-first and GDB-first). This page is a short decision checklist for lab packaging — it does not overwrite either compare.
When should I default to LLDB?
Apple/Xcode toolchains and many LLVM-centric courses. Confirm with LLDB overview and your installed lldb --version.
When should I default to GDB?
Many Linux teaching stacks, plus ecosystems that assume GEF/PEDA/pwndbg. See GDB vs LLDB and GEF tips.
Can both be installed together?
Yes on many lab images. Record which debugger produced each Evidence artifact so reviews stay attributable.
Does this teach anti-debug bypass on either tool?
No. Authorized debugging only — BinBench will not publish anti-anti-debug or exploit cookbooks.
