GDB vs LLDB — GPL vs Apache/LLVM debugger stacks

Last updated: · By the BinBench editorial team · Stars and releases checked via the GitHub API
Quick answer

GDB (GNU Debugger) and LLDB (LLVM project debugger) are the two open-source debuggers most developers meet on Unix-like systems. Both can inspect processes and cores you are allowed to debug. They are not substitutes for Windows-centric tools like x64dbg, and they are not “game cheat” frameworks.

When to choose which

Which to pick
  • Choose GDB when your platform docs, embedded probe scripts or teammates already speak GDB/MI.
  • Choose LLDB when you live in Clang/Xcode land or your org standardized on LLVM tooling.
  • On Windows PE user-mode reversing, also evaluate x64dbg and WinDbg vs x64dbg.
  • For runtime hooking across processes/devices, that is a different category — see Frida legal start.

Authorized-use checklist

  1. Debug your builds, employer builds you may test, or CTF binaries with clear rules.
  2. Prefer symbol-rich debug builds while learning.
  3. Do not publish bypasses for DRM, license checks or anti-cheat.
  4. Record exact debugger versions in lab notes.

Debuggers are dual-use. BinBench documents orientation only: no exploit PoCs, no anti-cheat bypass, no cracked toolchain hosting.

For legal, authorized and educational use only.

FAQ

Which licenses apply?

GDB is GNU GPL (v3-or-later family for current docs). LLDB is Apache License 2.0 with LLVM Exceptions per the LLDB project site.

Which is default on macOS toolchains?

LLDB is the debugger shipped with Xcode/Apple toolchains. Linux distros often default to GDB; both can be installed on many hosts.

Is either a Windows user-mode PE debugger like x64dbg?

Different niches. For classic Windows PE user-mode GUI debugging, see x64dbg / WinDbg comparisons on BinBench. GDB/LLDB shine on Unix-like native workflows and cross toolchains.

Do I need the latest numbered release cited here?

Distro packages lag upstream. Quote gdb --version / lldb --version from your lab image in reports rather than memorizing a single global number.

Can I use these to bypass anti-cheat?

No. Authorized debugging of software you own or may test only.
