GDB with PEDA/GEF — authorized lab overview

Last updated: · By the BinBench editorial team · Stars and releases checked via the GitHub API
Quick answer

GDB (sourceware.org/gdb) is the GNU debugger. PEDA and GEF are popular Python helpers that make GDB sessions easier to read. Use them only on processes and binaries you are authorized to debug.

Allowed framing

  • Teaching stack/register literacy on course binaries you compiled.
  • Debugging crashes in open-source programs under a license that permits debugging.
  • Comparing PEDA vs GEF vs pwndbg UX for a lab standard — without turning the class into exploit development.

Scope we will not cover

  • No exploit / ROP / shellcode cookbooks.
  • No crack/keygen / DRM bypass.
  • No anti-debug defeat recipes framed as “required PEDA features.”
  • No attaching to third-party production processes without authorization.

Beginner path (authorized only)

  1. Install distro GDB; confirm gdb --version in your lab VM.
  2. Choose one helper (GEF or PEDA); follow that project's README install into your user gdbinit — do not mix casually.
  3. Debug a tiny C program you wrote; practice breakpoints, stepi, and reading the enhanced context panes.
  4. Prefer GDB Dashboard or a different helper if your syllabus already standardized — see gdb-dashboard-overview.
  5. Escalate malware dynamic analysis to isolated VMs and org-approved tooling; keep helpers as UX, not weaponization.
Which to pick
  • Use GDB + PEDA or GEF for authorized interactive debugging readability.
  • Prefer one helper; compare with pwndbg via the dedicated page.
  • Refuse exploit and crack framing.

For legal, authorized and educational use only.

FAQ

What are PEDA and GEF?

Both are Python frameworks that enhance GDB's interactive display (registers, stack, disassembly context). PEDA (Python Exploit Development Assistance for GDB) is a classic helper; GEF (GDB Enhanced Features) is a widely maintained alternative with its own docs site.

Do I need PEDA and GEF together?

No. Pick one helper per GDB session to avoid command clashes. See pwndbg vs GEF if you are choosing among modern options including pwndbg.

Is this an exploit development course?

BinBench frames PEDA/GEF as authorized debugging UX for programs you own or may debug under contract/course rules — not as an exploit cookbook. We will not publish ROP/shellcode recipes.

GDB or LLDB?

Prefer GDB vs LLDB for platform trade-offs. GEF/PEDA target GDB; Apple-centric labs often start with LLDB.

Does this teach anti-debug bypass or cracking?

No. Authorized debugging and education only — BinBench will not supply crack, DRM or anti-debug bypass steps.
