Wireshark display filters tips — authorized checklist
Wireshark display filters narrow what you see in a PCAP you are authorized to review. Use these tips beside wireshark-pcap-authorized and tcpdump-basics-authorized.

Tip checklist (authorized only)
- Hash the PCAP; record Wireshark version in the case binder.
- Start with a broad-but-sane filter; tighten iteratively — save useful filters as Evidence.
- Prefer official field names from the Display Filter Reference for your version.
- Keep personal/unrelated traffic out of reports; minimize retained data per lab policy.
- Separate capture-time BPF notes from display-filter notes.
- Refuse TLS decryption without authorized keys.
Allowed framing
- Classroom review of instructor-provided PCAPs.
- Teaching
ip.addr/tcp.port/ protocol-field literacy with graded exercises. - Pairing network Evidence with binary RE notes under one case ID.
- Exporting a small filtered subset for reports you are allowed to write.
Scope we will not cover
- No café/airport/neighbor Wi-Fi taps framed as practice.
- No credential / cookie harvesting cookbooks.
- No corporate MITM or "bypass banking TLS" recipes.
- No exploit delivery via malicious PCAPs framed as tutorials.
Beginner path (authorized only)
- Open an authorized PCAP in Wireshark; record versions + hash.
- Apply one simple display filter from the syllabus; screenshot/export the filter string.
- Tighten once to answer a specific lab question; save the before/after counts.
- Optional: compare with how the PCAP was captured (tcpdump basics).
- Stop when the question is answered — do not hoard unrelated traffic.
- Use display filters for authorized, question-driven review.
- Prefer the PCAP overview for capture/GUI orientation; this page for filter tips.
- No credential theft or third-party tap framing.
For legal, authorized and educational use only.
FAQ
How is this different from wireshark-pcap-authorized?
Wireshark/PCAP is capture/GUI orientation. This page is a display-filter tip checklist for reviewing PCAPs you are authorized to hold.
Display filter vs capture filter?
Capture filters (often BPF via dumpcap/tcpdump) decide what hits disk. Display filters decide what you see afterward. Prefer tight capture on shared networks; see also tcpdump basics.
Can I practice on café Wi-Fi captures?
No. Only networks/hosts/files you are authorized to observe. Unauthorized taps are out of scope and often illegal.
Decrypting TLS in Wireshark?
Only with keys you are authorized to use (e.g., lab servers you control). BinBench will not publish corporate SSL interception or credential-theft recipes.
Does this teach credential harvesting from PCAPs?
No. Authorized lab review only — no phishing/cookie-theft cookbooks.
