WinDbg Preview — authorized lab orientation
WinDbg Preview is Microsoft's modern Windows debugger UI for authorized user-mode and (when your lab allows) kernel/dump work. Use it only against binaries, dumps and machines you are authorized to debug.
Snapshot
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Tool | WinDbg Preview (Microsoft) |
| Job | Windows debugging (user-mode first; kernel/dumps when authorized) |
| Sibling | WinDbg vs x64dbg |
| Peer UI | x64dbg getting started |
Allowed framing
- Attaching to or launching a lab binary you compiled on a disposable VM.
- Opening a crash dump your org collected under an IR or classroom policy.
- Teaching workspace layouts, module lists and basic breakpoints that match Microsoft Learn for your installed build.
- Comparing WinDbg Preview vs x64dbg ergonomics on the same authorized sample.
Scope we will not cover
- No anti-anti-debug, packer-unpack-for-piracy or DRM-bypass cookbooks.
- No credential / token theft via debugger scripts.
- No unauthorized production attach ("debug the CEO laptop") framing.
- No kernel exploit PoCs or driver weaponization tutorials.
Beginner path (authorized only)
- Install WinDbg Preview from the channel your lab approves; record the version in the case binder.
- Run a tiny C/C++ (or Rust) program you built under the debugger; practice break-on-entry and stack walk.
- Export or screenshot only what policy allows; prefer text command logs as Evidence.
- If the course is plugin-heavy user-mode RE, also complete x64dbg getting started.
- Escalate unknown samples with hashes → DiE / capa / Ghidra — still authorized-only.
- Use WinDbg Preview when the lab needs Microsoft's debugger on authorized Windows targets.
- Prefer x64dbg for many plugin-first user-mode courses; keep both in the toolkit map.
- Refuse crack, DRM-bypass, anti-anti-debug and credential-theft framing.
For legal, authorized and educational use only.
FAQ
How is this different from windbg-vs-x64dbg?
The comparison page helps pick a UI. This page is a WinDbg Preview product orientation — install posture, workspace habits and when Preview is the right classroom default.
Preview vs classic WinDbg / Debugging Tools for Windows?
WinDbg Preview (Store / modern package naming evolves) is the UI most courses mean by "WinDbg" today. Classic Debugging Tools for Windows still ship command-line helpers. Pin the exact build your lab image installs and cite Microsoft Learn for that build.
User-mode vs kernel?
Start with user-mode on processes you own. Kernel/driver labs need a separate authorized test machine and dump policy — BinBench will not publish exploit or anti-anti-debug cookbooks for either mode.
When should I use x64dbg instead?
Many malware-analysis and CTF-style user-mode courses prefer x64dbg getting started for plugins and UX. Use WinDbg Preview when the syllabus wants Microsoft's debugger, TTD (where licensed/available), or kernel/dump workflows your org already teaches.
Does this teach crack, DRM bypass or anti-anti-debug?
No. Authorized debugging and education only — no crack/keygen, DRM defeat or anti-anti-debug cookbooks.
