Process Monitor tips — authorized checklist
Process Monitor (Procmon) tips help keep authorized Windows traces small, attributable and reviewable. Start from the Procmon overview and the Sysinternals suite map.

Tip checklist (authorized only)
- Confirm host authorization and snapshot/rollback plan before tracing.
- Set filters before long captures; record the filter set beside the case ID.
- Prefer naming the target process early; avoid whole-desktop unfiltered runs on shared VMs.
- Save PML to a case directory; hash the file when you stop.
- Export summaries (CSV) only as needed; keep PML as the reopenable source of truth.
- Correlate with Autoruns / static RE notes under one binder — Procmon is not a disassembler.
- Disable/avoid boot logging unless the syllabus truly needs it on a disposable lab VM.
Allowed framing
- Troubleshooting an authorized installer or student app on a lab Windows VM.
- Teaching filter-first hygiene so Evidence stays reviewable in class.
- Pairing runtime touches with later Ghidra/capa notes without merging tool jobs.
- Exporting a short CSV excerpt into an incident-style lab report you are allowed to write.
Scope we will not cover
- No credential / cookie / token theft from traces.
- No anti-forensics or "blind Procmon" cookbooks.
- No DRM-bypass or crack validation via registry/file touches.
- No unauthorized monitoring of coworkers' or café machines.
Beginner path (authorized only)
- Install Procmon from Microsoft Sysinternals; record the version string.
- Apply a tight Process Name filter for your authorized test app.
- Reproduce one action; stop; save PML + hash.
- Sketch three interesting Path/Operation rows into case notes.
- Escalate persistence questions to Autoruns; binary questions to static RE tools.
- Treat Procmon tips as filter + export hygiene, not a malware stealth guide.
- Prefer the overview for concepts; this page for checklist practice.
- Authorized Windows hosts only.

FAQ
How is this different from procmon-overview-authorized?
Procmon overview is the tool orientation. This page is a tip checklist (filters, export, boot-log caution) for authorized Windows labs — it does not overwrite the overview.
Which filters should beginners start with?
Process Name, Path and Result/Operation filters keep PML size sane. Save filter sets with the case ID. Prefer dropping Drop Filtered Events when your build supports it and policy allows.
PML vs CSV export?
Keep a native PML when you may reopen in Procmon; export CSV/XML only for notes you need outside the tool. Hash exports into Evidence.
Boot logging tips?
Only on lab VMs you own; expect huge logs and stricter change control. Confirm current UI steps in Microsoft docs for your Procmon build — do not invent buttons.
Does this teach hiding malware from Procmon or stealing credentials?
No. Authorized triage only — BinBench will not supply anti-forensics, credential theft or DRM-bypass cookbooks.
