Checklist (authorized only)
- Install from the official channel; record the ImHex version.
- Hash the sample before any edit; work on a case copy.
- Prefer read-only inspection first; treat writes as deliberate lab steps with undo/notes.
- Keep Pattern Language scripts reviewed and syllabus-approved.
- Export bookmarks/notes as Evidence under one case ID.
- Refuse crack/DRM-bypass patch requests outright.
Allowed framing
- Classroom structure decoding of courseware binaries.
- Teaching Pattern Language literacy on files you built yourself.
- Comparing ImHex with Hex Fiend/010 as packaging choices — not piracy guides.
- Pairing with strings/xxd before a full decompiler.
Scope we will not cover
- No crack/keygen hex-patch cookbooks.
- No DRM / license bypass via patterns.
- No pirate installer distribution.
- No unauthorized opening of third-party production files "just to see."
Beginner path (authorized only)

FAQ
How is this different from imhex-overview?
imhex-overview is the product/version orientation. This page is an authorized lab checklist (scope, Evidence, refusals) — it does not overwrite the overview.
Which version should labs pin?
Prefer the current stable GitHub Release assets from the official project. Record the exact version string in case notes (overview historically cited v1.38.1; re-check at lab time — framing date 2026-10-24).
Pattern Language on unauthorized files?
No. Patterns and bookmarks only on files you may examine. Do not treat Pattern Language as a DRM-bypass aid.
ImHex vs 010 Editor / Hex Fiend?
See ImHex vs 010 and ImHex vs Hex Fiend for compares — this page stays on authorized-use hygiene.
Does this teach license-string patching?
No. Authorized inspection only — BinBench will not supply crack patches or keygens from hex edits.
