IDAPython — authorized lab orientation

Quick answer

IDAPython is the Python automation layer inside IDA (Hex-Rays). Use it only on programs and IDBs you are authorized to analyze, and only under an IDA edition your lab lawfully holds.

Allowed framing

  • Automating renaming, bookmarking or report export on course binaries students compiled.
  • Teaching students to read Hex-Rays IDAPython docs for their installed edition before copying blog snippets.
  • Comparing automation cost with Ghidra scripts when a syllabus allows either host.

Scope we will not cover

  • No crack/keygen / “IDA Pro forever” pirate installs.
  • No claiming Free/Home exposes every Pro API — verify on vendor pages.
  • No exploit / ROP / shellcode cookbooks packaged as IDAPython “helpers.”
  • No anti-debug or DRM defeat recipes.

Beginner path (authorized only)

  1. Confirm which IDA edition your lab licenses (Free / Home / commercial) and that Python scripting is available for that build.
  2. Open a tiny program you own; run Help / IDAPython docs for that version.
  3. Write a short script that only prints function names or comments — no patching commercial binaries.
  4. Keep scripts and IDBs inside the authorization boundary; do not redistribute vendor-licensed material.
  5. If you need fully open-source automation, prefer Ghidra scripts under Apache-2.0.
Which to pick
  • Use IDAPython to automate authorized IDA work under a lawful Hex-Rays edition.
  • Prefer Ghidra scripting when the lab must stay fully open-source.
  • Refuse crack, keygen and DRM-bypass framing — Free/Home limits stay honest.

For legal, authorized and educational use only.

FAQ

What is IDAPython?

IDAPython is Hex-Rays' Python scripting surface inside IDA — scripts/plugins that call IDA APIs (functions, segments, comments, batch helpers) on a database you already opened. Exact API availability depends on edition and version.

Does IDA Free include IDAPython?

Treat Free/Home/commercial feature sets as vendor-defined and version-specific. Confirm the current Hex-Rays Free/Home feature matrix before promising classroom automation — do not assume Pro-only APIs exist on Free. See IDA Free vs Home and IDA freeware overview.

IDAPython vs Ghidra scripts?

Different hosts. Ghidra's Java/Python scripting is Apache-2.0 OSS — see ghidra-scripts overview. IDAPython lives inside Hex-Rays' proprietary IDA product under that license.

Can I share IDA databases or scripts that bypass licensing?

No. Respect Hex-Rays EULA/edition limits. BinBench will not help crack, keygen or pirate IDA.

Does this teach exploit or DRM defeat automation?

No. Authorized analysis and education only — no exploit PoCs, crack cookbooks or DRM bypass scripts.
