Allowed framing

  • Teaching PE directory layouts on your lab binaries.
  • Comparing classic CFF panes with PE-bear on owned samples.
  • Documenting import tables before escalating to a disassembler.

Scope we will not cover

  • No exploit PoC / shellcode cookbooks from PE rebuilds.
  • No crack/keygen framing.
  • No assuming “Suite IV” third-party mirrors are official.

Beginner path (authorized only)

  1. Download the multi-platform Explorer Suite zip from ntcore.com; verify the published SHA-256.
  2. Prefer a disposable Windows lab VM; snapshot before loading unknown PE samples.
  3. Start with a PE you compiled; walk headers → sections → imports before any save-as rebuild.
  4. For modern .NET source-oriented reading, escalate to dnSpyEx / ILSpy notes rather than forcing CFF to be a decompiler.
  5. Record Suite III beside case hashes — do not silently mix unofficial forks.
Which to pick
  • Use CFF Explorer (Suite III) for classic PE/.NET structure labs on authorized binaries.
  • Prefer PE-bear when you want a maintained open PE viewer by default.
  • Refuse exploit and crack framing.

For legal, authorized and educational use only.

FAQ

What is CFF Explorer?

CFF Explorer is the PE editor included in Erik Pistelli's freeware Explorer Suite. It exposes PE32/PE64 headers, directories, resources, imports and historically early .NET metadata views, plus helpers such as a dependency walker and hex editor.

Which version is cited?

Official NTCore pages list Explorer Suite III dated 18/11/2012 as the current freeware download (checked 2026-10-24). Third-party “Suite IV” listings are not the official NTCore release — prefer the hashes published on ntcore.com.

What license applies?

Freeware from NTCore (not an OSI SPDX open-source project). Prefer the author's download page and published SHA-256 for the multi-platform suite zip.

PE-bear/pestudio or CFF Explorer?

Prefer PE-bear for actively maintained open PE triage and pestudio for indicator-oriented views. Prefer CFF Explorer when a syllabus or lab already standardizes on Explorer Suite III, or when you need its classic .NET structure panes on authorized samples.

Does this teach writing exploits or PE rebuild abuse?

No. Authorized research and education only — BinBench will not supply exploit PoCs, malicious rebuild recipes or crack framing.
